What is ascorbic acid and how does it work to neutralize chlorine?

Ascorbic acid is the scientific name for vitamin C.

Ascorbic acid (pure Vitamin C) applied to the skin acts as a potent antioxidant, brightening complexion, reducing hyperpigmentation, and stimulating collagen production to minimize fine lines. It neutralizes free radicals from UV damage, improves skin texture, and enhances the effectiveness of sunscreen.

Ascorbic acid neutralizes chlorine through a rapid redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction where it acts as a reducing agent, converting harmful chlorine into harmless chloride ions and dehydroascorbic acid. It is highly effective because it acts quickly.
